“Physical” - Swimmingpool The Band
Well, here it is, my first cover in a while. Literally all of you should know the classic Olivia Newton John song that I’m covering. Between the classic film “Xanadu” and this, she is to me what others would call a guilty pleasure (only I don’t feel guilty when I listen to her).
I sort of started this on a whim and realized her melodramatic tendencies lend themselves to my own, making my music, though dissonant and removed from her pop-sheen, easy to build around her melodies. Sonically, my take is, of course, not as shiny and clean as the magnificent original. The guitars are slower, denser, caked in heavy layers of reverb and distortion. I tried my best to exploit how little the original song’s key shifts.
The album will be called Physical. I realize completely that the original is nearly untouchable, but, like many before me in choosing songs to cover, I did this one in total sincerity. I hope that I’m honoring the original with my own take on the steamy and sweet passion that is “Physical”.
